Design inspiration: layered greenery, softly lit trees styled with a beautiful white Christmas village.
I want Christmas at home to feel warm, welcoming and a little magical. Think soft twinkling trees, warm cozy blankets, beautiful textured ornaments and the kind of room you want to settle into at the end of the day. That’s my idea of a Cozy Chic Christmas. As an interior designer in San Diego and the designer behind Rachael Shea Interiors, I love finding ways to make seasonal decorating feel like it belongs in your home. You can mix affordable finds with a few special pieces and still get a look that feels pulled together.
What makes Christmas feel cozy and chic?
Cozy is all about how the room feels. Soft wool, chunky knits, velvet ribbon and warm white lights make it inviting. Greenery and woven baskets add that natural texture that keeps everything from feeling too shiny.
Chic is what makes it feel pulled together. Start with cream, ivory and taupe, then add a little brown, brass or amber. Repeat those colors around the room. Mix something soft with something shiny, and leave enough space to see the pieces you’ve chosen. A velvet ornament next to glass, or a knit stocking beside a slim brass candleholder, gives you that mix. You don’t need everything to match perfectly. Use what you already love, then fill in the gaps.
The entryway: set the mood at the door
Let’s start with that first glimpse when you walk in. Small lit trees and a white Christmas village make a console feel festive right away. The arched mirror in our inspiration image gives the trees a beautiful backdrop.
Mix a taller tree with a couple of smaller ones, using stone or ceramic pots in similar tones. Tuck the village between them, then lay a few Norfolk pine stems around the bases to connect everything. Leave a little room between the houses so you can enjoy their details.
A basket and a soft throw underneath finish the look. Keep a spot for your keys, too—this still needs to work as your entryway!
Shop the entryway look:
20-inch Pre-Lit Mini Christmas Tree: the smaller tree for your grouping.
Porcelain Tabletop Christmas Village: the glowing white houses at the center of the arrangement.
Real-Touch Norfolk Pine Stems: tuck around the pots and village for a fuller look.
Silas Handwoven Wool Throw: drape over a woven basket underneath.
Carry those same warm lights and natural textures into the living room, starting with the star of the whole space: the Christmas tree.
The Christmas tree: the centerpiece of the living room
The Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your Christmas decor, so start with the tree itself. Its size, shape and lights set the mood for everything around it. The National Tree Company’s 9 Ft Pre-Lit Dunhil Fir Artificial Christmas Tree is one of my favorites for a beautiful, full, authentic looking tree. If you love the green tree in our inspiration image, use that as your starting point and bring in the same cream and organic colored ornaments.
Measure the height and width of your space before choosing a tree, leaving room for a topper and a comfortable path around the furniture. Once it’s in place, fluff the branches and check the lights before adding ornaments. Those first steps make a big difference.
Now add the texture. Mix larger ornaments with smaller ones, and spread your velvet, glass and pearly finishes around the tree. Tuck a few ornaments deeper into the branches and let the shiny ones catch the lights near the tips. Velvet bows give it that soft, finished look. Keep your favorite family ornaments in the mix, too.

Faux Downswept Flocked Pine Pre-Lit Tree: start here for a snowy take on the look.
Winter White Luster Round Ornaments: add a soft pearly shine.
Flocked Velvet Ornaments, 25 Pack: bring in the plush texture that makes this tree feel cozy.
Neutral Velvet Ribbon Bows: weave soft color and movement through the branches.
Winter White Faux Fur Tree Skirt: finish the base with another soft layer.
Wrap a few gifts in kraft or cream paper and repeat the ribbon from the tree. Then bring a throw and a warm neutral pillow into the seating area. It’s an easy way to make the whole living room feel connected before moving on to the coffee table.
The coffee table: bring the look within reach
The coffee table is where you can bring a little of the tree’s sparkle into everyday life. Start with a stack of books, add an organic bowl, and finish with a little candlelight. Keep space for a drink and the things you actually use.
Fill the bowl loosely with pine stems and a few ornaments in the same colors as your tree. Let some greenery spill over the edge. Glass adds shine next to the rougher bowl and stone tray, so the arrangement feels interesting even with a simple palette.
Shop the coffee table look:
The Art of Home: a beautiful book to anchor the arrangement and enjoy after Christmas.
Decorative Coffee Table Bowl: the main piece for greenery and ornaments.
Medium Winter Metallics Ornaments: add a little champagne and white sparkle to the bowl.
Stack Square White Travertine Tray: keeps the smaller accents together.
Clear Acrylic Nutcracker: for a playful, modern finishing touch that picks up the light without adding another color.
If you add candles beside greenery, choose flameless ones. On a smaller table, a filled bowl and one accent may be plenty. The idea is to make the room feel inviting and easy to live in. Next, let’s bring that same warmth to the fireplace.
The mantel: finish with greenery, stockings and glow
The fireplace is where the greenery, stockings and warm glow all come together. Start with a wreath above the mantel - it’s okay to layer over your existing mirror or artwork. Then layer in some natural green garland along the top. Let a few branches fall naturally over the edge instead of trying to make every side perfectly even.
Add a few slim candleholders for height, then hang the stockings. Cream cable knits look beautiful against wood, stone or painted millwork. You can use the same stocking for everyone or mix a few knit patterns in the same color. Give them enough space to see the texture.
Shop the mantel look:
36-inch Pre-Lit Fir Wreath: the main piece above the fireplace; check its size and power source before placing it.
Cable-Knit Stocking: the cozy finishing touch, repeated across the mantel.
Real-Touch Norfolk Pine Stems: layer these around the fireplace for soft, natural-looking greenery.
Keep stockings and greenery clear of the firebox and follow your fireplace’s clearance requirements. The inspiration image is about the styling; adjust the placement for your own fireplace.
